OSCP vs PNPT vs CPTS: which certification should you choose?
We compare the three most popular hands-on pentesting certifications: price, exam format, difficulty and market recognition.
All three are hands-on pentesting certifications, but each takes a different approach. Here is what you should know before paying.
OSCP (OffSec)
The most recognised by HR and the one that appears in most job postings. 24-hour exam plus report. It is the most expensive, and its material is famous for "try harder": you will learn a lot on your own.
PNPT (TCM Security)
Great value for money. The exam simulates a real 5-day pentest with OSINT, Active Directory and a live debrief where you present your findings. Ideal if you are looking for your first job.
CPTS (HackTheBox)
Probably the most technically demanding of the three. A 10-day exam and a very thorough professional report. The HTB Academy syllabus is extensive and high quality.
So, which one?
- You need to get past HR filters: OSCP.
- Tight budget and first job: PNPT.
- You want the highest technical level: CPTS.
Many professionals end up doing two: PNPT or CPTS to learn, and OSCP for the CV.
